One medium tomato contains approximately 25 calories, 5 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein, 0 grams of fat, and one gram of fiber. Tomatoes are full of vitamin C – approximately 40% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA), 20% RDA of vitamin A, and about 4 mg of lycopene is found in one tomato. These antioxidant vitamins help protect cells from different types of cancer, by destroying free radicals (molecules that cause damage to healthy cells). Tomatoes account for 80% of where lycopene comes from in the American diet.
