June is the beginning of cantaloupe season in our area; here are helpful hints to help choose a fresh, ripe cantaloupe. Cantaloupes do not ripen further once they are picked from the vine. Look for cantaloupes where there is no stem remaining on the fruit; finding stem means the fruit is not quite ready for picking. The skin color of cantaloupe should be golden, not green, and the cantaloupe should have a sweet aroma when smelling the opposite end from the stem of the cantaloupe. Lastly, a cantaloupe should feel firm, and free of soft, squishy spots. Shop Market Basket now for seasonal fresh, ripe cantaloupes!
