Market Basket was co-founded in 1961 by Bruce and Alletta Thompson and celebrated their 50th anniversary as a family owned and operated independent grocer in 2011. In August of that same year, they continued their growth with the opening of a new Leesville, LA store. Then in mid-November, Market Basket purchased a small four-store chain of supermarkets named Big Star, with locations in West-Central Louisiana. “We are excited about our continued growth and the opportunity to extend our services to additional markets in Texas and Louisiana,” commented Skylar Thompson, President. “Completion of new stores, purchase of additional stores in new areas and remodeling of existing Market Basket locations shows our commitment to continued growth and excellence of service to our customers.”
