It’s easy to preserve the taste of walnuts by keeping them properly stored after purchase. The pantry is the right place when the walnuts are tightly sealed in their original container, but once they are opened – storage procedures should change. Once the walnut packaging has been opened, transfer any remaining walnuts to an airtight container to maintain freshness. If the walnuts will be used soon, they are best kept in the refrigerator; for longer storage, it’s best to store walnuts in the freezer to maintain quality and flavor. Walnuts can go rancid when exposed to warm temperatures for long periods of time, and may develop a sour odor. Think airtight and cold storage for best quality walnuts!
