Husband | Father | Leader | Servant | Innovator
Our dear founder and leader, Bruce Carrel Thompson, went to be with the Lord and his beloved wife Alletta on Saturday, October 19, 2019. Although born in 1926 in Marlow, Oklahoma, Mr. Thompson loved no place more than Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. This was his home.
Mr. Thompson knew the value of hard work, and after starting in a supervisory role with another company, he decided to fulfill his dream of opening a grocery store. In 1962, Bruce’s opened in Groves, TX. As the years progressed, the company grew into Market Basket as we know it today.
Mr. Thompson lived by a simple philosophy and followed it in every aspect of his life. Love and serve God and his wife first and lead others through generous service. He exemplified this as a member of the United States Navy, church leader, school board member, and numerous other community efforts.
Never limited by fear, he saw problems as opportunities. He connected like no one else could to his employees, business associates, and customers. He made everyone feel like they were unique and left a lasting impression on them. Those who knew him best will also remember an avid deer hunter, Cowboy fan, and ice cream enthusiast.
The world may have lost one of it’s most loved and influential men, but his kindness and example will shine brightly for generations to come.
