Sea salt is produced through evaporation of ocean water or water from saltwater lakes. This process is usually done with minimal processing, which helps sea salt retain more flavor, trace elements and color. Table salt is mined from underground salt deposits and undergoes more processing to prevent clumping. Iodine is added to table salt, which is an essential nutrient that helps maintain a healthy thyroid. The amount of sodium in sea salt and table salt is the same – therefore each has the same effect on health and blood pressure. If you prefer the taste of sea salt, it may be good practice to rotate use of sea salt and iodized table salt to obtain enough iodine to help maintain a healthy thyroid (Sea Salt may be purchased iodized).
