What are Refined Carbohydrates?
by Carolyn Bell, RDN
What is a refined carbohydrate; why are others recommending “no refined carbohydrates”? Refined carbohydrates (carbs) have been stripped of fiber (and fiber is really good for us.) Fiber is absorbed and digested slowly, which helps keep us full longer, and helps avoid spikes in blood sugar levels. Refined carbs are found in items like sugar, white rice, rice bread. Unrefined carbs are healthy carbohydrates, which contain fiber, and these are thought of as “good carbs”. Unrefined carbs contain fiber (which also helps in elimination) and are carbs found in whole grain products like: whole wheat bread, whole-grain cereals, brown rice, fruits and vegetables. Choose whole grain foods whenever possible for a healthy, wholesome, fiber-rich diet!
